Tethered shooting is the backbone of a real-time event photography workflow. By connecting your camera directly to the BrandStudio capture app, every image you take is instantly available for processing, branding, and delivery. This guide walks through the complete setup, from plugging in your cable to watching photos appear in guest galleries seconds after capture.

Start with the hardware. BrandStudio's iOS capture app supports tethered connections via USB and Wi-Fi for Canon and Nikon cameras through the ImageCaptureCore framework. Connect your camera to an iPad or iPhone running the capture app, and the device becomes your tethered hub. The app detects your camera automatically and begins importing images as they are shot. Each image is uploaded to the BrandStudio backend where it enters the processing pipeline: face detection runs first, identifying every face in the frame, followed by matching against registered guests and known persons in the system.

Once faces are matched, the system applies your configured branding overlay, including logos, watermarks, and custom borders, and routes the finished photo to the appropriate guest gallery. Guests who registered with their phone number receive an SMS notification with a link to view and download their photo. The entire chain, from shutter release to guest notification, typically completes in under ten seconds on a good network connection. For photographers accustomed to delivering galleries days after an event, this is a fundamental shift in what the job looks like.

There are a few practical tips for reliable tethered shooting at events. First, use a wired USB connection whenever possible since Wi-Fi tethering can drop in crowded venues with heavy RF interference. Second, shoot in JPEG rather than RAW for tethered sessions; the smaller file sizes keep the upload queue moving and guests do not need 50-megapixel files on their phones. Third, configure your session settings before the event starts. Set the event, choose your overlay, and verify face recognition is enabled. BrandStudio's session system lets you tag photos by location or time block, which keeps large events organized and makes it easy for guests to find their images in the gallery.
